Sabian HHX cymbals have been my fav since I walked into Legends Studio, in the Berry Hill area of Nashville, in 2009, to record David Ball’s Sparkle City album. The studio drum kit was decked out in these cymbals, and I loved every one of them. As I began to replace cymbals over the years, shopping through Craigslist for used gems, I came across this 20” Stage Ride, in brilliant finish, around 2018-2019.
This became my go-to ride cymbal as Aaron Sparling & I were putting together the Hippies & Cowboys band. I wanted a ride cymbal that I could also crash on, and this one fit the bill. What I love about the HHX line is that it’s the perfect blend of warmth and cut. Zildjian K’s are too dark, and the heavier rock cymbals are too bright, the ride cymbals too thick to crash on.
And crash on it I did. Especially once we got to the Main Stage at Kid Rock’s Big Honky Tonk, on Broadway, downtown Nashville, in the Spring of 2022. We turned up the volume of the Hippies & Cowboys once we got onto that bigger stage, and I bashed a little harder.
Sadly, a hairline crack began to form from the outer edge after about 18 months on that stage and the increased weekend touring that happened in 2023. Immediately, I could hear the volume of the cymbal drop and the slight vibration of the two sides of the crack rubbing together.
I had to retire the cymbal from the road and go back to a heavier model from my collection, a 20” Sabian HH Rock Ride from the 80’s, that I am still using. But YOU could have this cymbal as a collectible piece of Hippies & Cowboys memorabilia, autographed if you’d like!
